The Kounadis Archive started being established in the early 1960s by Panagiotis Kounadis, a researcher and scholar of Greek music and songs, and since 2008 has been established as a civic non-profit organization. It is the most comprehensive and organized Center for the Research & Study of Greek 78 rpm Discography. It aims to collect, classify, research, record, study, rescue and disseminate Greek songs and music, as well as any other relevant information. It is comprised of material that has mainly been recorded during the period between 1900 and 1960 in various ways and different fields, with a central focus on music.
This rich collection of archival material, which includes 78 rpm records, musical scores, interviews, photographs, postcards, sound reproduction apparatuses and musical instruments, formed the basis of the Kounadis Archive Virtual Museum, which was realized thanks to a grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). With its research, educational and interactive character as its main features, as well as its personalization, openness, dynamism and accessibility to everyone, the Virtual Museum attempts to create a holistic digital experience regarding the phonograph era: the possibility of searching and exploring the digital collection, a virtual tour, digital stories, online educational apps and games are offered to the visitor.
