The present recording includes the songs "Chares archiste lygeres" and "Ha! Ha! Ha!"
Both songs can be found in an earlier recording entitled "I nyfi tis Koulouris I and II", which was also made by the Greek Estudiantina in Constantinople during August–September 1906, approximately one year before the present recording. "Chares archiste lygeres" appears together with the song "Sta galana sou ta nera" in "I nyfi tis Koulouris II" (Zonophone 1464r – X-104545), while "Ha! Ha! Ha!", occupying the other side of the disc, is included in "I nyfi tis Koulouris I" (Zonophone 1463 – X-104544).
As indicated by the title of the recording, these songs formed part of the eponymous komidylleio (vaudeville) "I nyfi tis Koulouris", with both text and music by Evangelos Pantopoulos.
The vaudeville premiered in Athens on September 16, 1895 at the "Tsocha" theater by the Pantopoulos’ - Alexiadis’ - Zanos’ "Athens" troupe.
The play, "a character comedy of purely Greek morals with songs in 3 acts, full of plot, action, comedy sketches and local dances", as stated in the programme of the play, was staged in December 1895 at the Odeon Theater (formerly Verdis) in Constantinople (Istanbul) by the Panellinios Dramatikos Thiasos (Panhellenic Drama Troupe). According to the above programme, Evangelos Pantopoulos and Loudovikos Spinellis collaborated on the music of the play, "composed on the basis of folk-like music".
For the vaudeville "I nyfi tis Koulouris" see Giannis Sideris’ essay "To komeidyllio, 1888-1896", Ta Mousika Chronika, Athens, 1933, p. 49-50.
We should also note that the Christidis publishing house of Constantinople published, in its "Chants grecs avec accompagnement de piano" series, a music score (no. 106) entitled "Ha! Ha! Ha! (Album)", signed by Foscolo.
